Our Story

A basement with a past

Where history lingers

The house above us — the Olde Town Inn — was built between 1871 and 1873 by Celia LaFitte DeLaigle, a determined widow, in Augusta's historic Olde Town district.

It survived the Great Fire of 1916 and the slow decline of downtown, until philanthropist Peter Knox bought up more than sixty neighborhood properties in the 1970s and breathed new life into the district.

The Fox's Lair is born

Inspired by his equestrian life and the fox hunts he rode with friends, Knox transformed the home's basement into a bar — and named it The Fox's Lair.

Fifty years on, it's still here: exposed brick, dim light, and a stage that's hosted countless musicians, comedians, and Thursday-night first-timers. "The coolest place you'll never find," as the regulars say.
